    Mr. Fix-it

My younger brother is MacGyver.  He is resourceful, knows about how to repair nearly every mechanical device and I cannot remember the last time he called on a professional to fix anything.  I, on the other hand, as handy as I am know that there are times when the professionals have to be called - and then called back again.  You see recently my roof was damaged by a storm and it leaked in one of the back rooms.  So, I called the insurance company and they sent out a crew of men to work on the roof.  It was my day off so I saw them, gave them refreshments and they assured me after they were through that there would be no more leaks.  They lied.  The roof still leaks and moans and creaks.  I am only a little furious because I recently had the insurance man come out to stand under the leaking roof.  They won this round but not the next.  You see professionals will tell you anything so that you remain dependent upon them for everything.  I know better and so should everyone.  That is why I started this site - to let people know that they can tap into their own ingenuity, creativity and abilities to do a whole host of things.  Every been frustrated when the professionals got things wrong?  Of course you have.  So keep visiting the site while we find out together what all we can do on our own.

So when last I left my reader(s) - I don't know which at this point - I was right in the middle of my project to retile the bathroom floor which I had been putting off. Instructions on doing so are plentiful and all that you need to do so can be found in our store. I finished the job with very little effort.  (I will try to post pictures if anyone is interested.)  After I finished this job it occurred to me how much more I could do around the old homestead.  You see my home was built in the fifties and is relatively old. The trick is in gauging what should be done by professionals and what you can handle yourself.  Sometimes the wrong choice can be made - For example, I just had the roof replaced due to a storm that hit the area recently.  I did not want to take on this job myself and I do have insurance of course so I let the insurance company contract out a company to do it - now the roof creeks and moans. I decided, after leaks developed, to arrange for my insurance agent to come out to my house while it was raining so that he could stand under the leaky roof.  We are still talking about the redux.

The point is you have to constantly decide what you can and should do for yourself and what the professionals do knowing all along that the decision you make may not always turn out the way you wish.  Fortunately, for me the bathroom redo did turn out well but the roof well, that's another thing. There is plenty more to do everyday.  Some things can wait and are just cosmetic and other things are more urgent and must be tended to immediately.  I'm the sort of the person who does not like to procrastinate and who wants to save money if money can be saved.  But first I have to get the word out to my reader (s).  So if you can help me by going to my Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/diyucantry and help to grow my site, I can hopefully help others who want to be more self-sufficient.  I await your likes.

Welcome to the DIYUCANTRY and my inaugural post.  This site is designed for people who want to rely a little less on the “professionals” and more on their own ingenuity and creativity.  My site will hopefully add value to those who want to use these two assets in their own DIY projects.  In the coming months - and hopefully years if this project works out – I will provide information, videos and products that will help my visitors become more reliant on their own efforts and more in control of their own budgets.  A few words about the various sections of my website:

The energy section is meant to give my visitors the tools needed to help break their reliance on dirty fuels.  As everyone knows, that addiction is relentless, expensive and it fuels much of the political turmoil around the world.  The home and garden sections are there to help people who want creative and budgetary control over their living spaces.  Be it painting or even building an old cabinet or starting an herb garden, every resource will hopefully help you the visitor on the road to self-reliance and self-expression.  Finally, the arts and crafts section of DIYUCANTRY is there for two reasons:  (1) I am basically an artist at heart and (2) the arts and crafts movement is undergoing a renaissance.  People are using these forms of self-expression to wed themselves to their environment.

Those are some of my thoughts behind the site and the various sections of this site.  If you, as a visitor, have any questions or suggestions for improvement then I am certainly open to your suggestions.  Contact me for how to improve the site and make it more functional, easier to navigate, etc.
